Eugen-Ludwig Zweigart
Oberleutnant

Eugen-Ludwig Zweigart

Eugen-Ludwig Zweigart was born on 3 May 1914 at Saargemünd in Lothringen. He joined the army in 1935 but later transferred to the Luftwaffe and underwent flying training. Zweigart was posted to 9./JG 54 in autumn 1940. On 10 November, he gained his first victory when he shot down a RAF Blenheim twin-engine bomber near De Kooi in Holland. However, it was over the Eastern front that Zweigart would claim the majority of his victories. By the end of 1941, he had nine victories to his credit. He had increased his victory total to 15 by May 1942 and, by the end of October, his total stood at 44. On 29 December, Zweigart claimed four victories to record his 51st through 54th victories. Oberfeldwebel Zweigart was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 22 January 1943 for 54 victories. Shortly after the award of the Ritterkreuz, Zweigart was transferred to undertake instructional duties. He returned to 9./JG 54, now based on the Western front undertaking Reichsverteidigung duties, in May 1943. Zweigart recorded his 58th victory on 25 July. However, he was shot down in aerial combat with USAAF four-engine bombers on 27 July. He was able to bale out of his stricken Bf 109 G-6 (W.Nr. 15 678) “Yellow 7” although he sustained wounds in the engagement. Zweigart was transferred to 7./JG 54 on 16 October 1943. In March 1944, he transferred to 8./JG 54. Finally in May, he transferred to the Gruppenstab of III./JG 54. Meanwhile, he achieved considerable success against the USAAF four-engine bombers. On 6 March, he claimed three USAAF B-17 bombers shot down. On 8 June 1944, Zweigart was shot down in Fw 190 A-8 (W.Nr. 170 736) “Black 3” in aerial combat near Le Cambaux. He baled out but was then shot and killed while hanging in his parachute.
Eugen-Ludwig Zweigart was credited with 69 victories. He recorded 53 victories over the Eastern front. Of his 16 victories recorded over the Western front, at least 11 were four-engine bombers
