Walther Wever was born on 16 January 1923 at München.
He was the son of General der Flieger Walther Wever, the first Staff General
of the new Luftwaffe who had been killed in an aircraft accident on 3 June
1936. Wever was posted to 3./JG 51 based on the Eastern front in summer
1943. He gained his first victory on 19 June, when he shot down a Russian
Boston twin-engine bomber. On 1 September, Wever claimed a Russian Il-2
Sturmovik over Yel’nya to record his 10th victory. He shot down three Il-2
Sturmoviks in five minutes on 5 September to record his 11th through 13th
victories. By the end of 1943, Wever had increased his victory total to
22, including 16 Il-2 Sturmoviks! On 29 March 1944, he claimed five enemy
aircraft shot down (30-34). On 9 May 1944, Wever was appointed Staffelkapitän
of 3./JG 51. He shot down a USAAF B-17 four-engined bomber over Poland
on 21 June 1944. Wever recorded his 40th victory on 24 June, when he shot
down yet another Il-2 Sturmovik. He was shot down by Russian ground fire
in Bf 109 G-6 (W.Nr. 410 413) “Brown 4” on 10 July. He was badly wounded
in the incident resulting in the amputation of a foot. Leutnant Wever was
awarded the Ritterkreuz on 28 January 1945 for 44 victories. In February
1945, Wever was transferred as Staffelkapitän of 7./JG 7 following conversion
training on to the Me 262 jet fighter. On 10 April 1945, Wever was shot
down and killed in aerial combat with Allied fighters near Neuruppin.
Walther Wever was credited with 44 victories in
250 missions. He recorded all his success over the Eastern
front, including 24 Il-2 Sturmoviks and
one four-engine bomber in his victory total.
