
Joachim Schlichting was born on 1 February 1914 at
Kassel. Schlichting was Staffelkapitän of 2. Staffel of J 88 of the
Condor Legion, supporting the Nationalists in the Spanish
Civil War, from 6 September 1937 to 28 May 1938. Oberleutnant Schlichting
recorded five victories during the conflict and was awarded the Spanienkreuz
in Gold mit Schwertern und Brillanten for his achievements. On 1 November
1938, Schlichting was appointed Staffelkapitän of 3.(J)/LG 2. He led
the unit during the Polish campaign. Schlichting was appointed Geschwader
Adjutant of JG 27 on 1 November 1939. He served in this role until 31 January
1940. On 1 February 1940, Schlichting was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of
I./JG 1. He led the unit during the French campaign,
gaining two victories. On 5 July, I./JG 1 was redesignated III./JG 27.
Hauptmann Schlichting led III./JG 27 into the Battle
of Britain. He gained a further victory in the aerial battles over
England, when he shot down a RAF Spitfire fighter near Portland on 25 July
1940 to record his eighth, and last, victory. Schlichting was shot down
over the Thames in Bf 109 E-4 (W.Nr. 1380) in aerial combat with RAF Spitfire
fighters on 6 September 1940. He baled out of his stricken machine with
severe burns and wounds. He was to spend the remainder the war as a prisoner
of war. Schlichting was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 14 December in recognition
of his outstanding execution of escort tasks and his unselfish renouncement
of his own combat successes. Schlichting died on 7 July 1982 at Basel in
Switzerland.

He recorded five victories during the Spanish
Civil War.
