Karl-Heinz Scherfling was born on 6 September 1918
at Gelsenkirchen in Ruhrgebiet. Scherfling was posted to 7./NJG 1 at the
end of 1940. He recorded his first victory on the night of 31 March/1 April
1941, when he shot down a RAF Wellington twin-engine bomber near Groningen.
On the night of 9/10 April, he recorded his second, and the Nachtjagd’s
first, victory over a four-engine bomber when he shot down a RAF Stirling
near Lingen. In spring 1942, Scherfling transferred to 5./NJG 2. By the
end of 1942, he had increased his victory total to six. On 1 October, 5./NJG
2 was redesignated 10./NJG 1. On the night of 23/24 May 1943, Scherfling
claimed two RAF four-engine bombers shot down to record his 10th and 11th
victories. He claimed three RAF Lancaster four-engine bombers shot down
on the night of 25/26 June (15-17). Scherfling claimed his 20th victory
on the night of 13/14 July, when he shot down a RAF Halifax four-engine
bomber near Utrecht. By October 1943, Scherfling was serving with 12./NJG
1. He was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 8 April 1944 for 29 victories. On
the night of 30/31 March 1944, Scherfling claimed a Lancaster shot down
near Venlo to record his 30th victory. On the night of 20/21 July 1944,
Scherfling recorded his 33rd, and last, victory. Shortly afterwards, he
was shot down and killed in Bf 110 G-4 (W.Nr. 730 218) “G9 + EZ” by a British
night fighter. Scherfling’s Bordschütze was also killed in the engagement,
but his Bordfunker survived, albeit badly wounded.
Karl-Heinz Scherfling was credited with 33 victories.
All his victories were recorded at night.
