Hans Schäfer

Hans Schäfer was serving with JG 3 in July 1943.
Feldwebel Schäfer was assigned to 10./JG 3 based on the island of Sicily
in the Mediterranean theatre. He claimed his first victory on 2 July, when
he shot down a USAAF B-24 four-engine bomber. On 12 July, Schäfer shot
down a RAF Spitfire fighter to claim his second victory but his Bf 109
G-6 (W.Nr. 19 929) was also damaged in the dogfight and he had to make
an emergency landing at Gerbini. His machine was 70% damaged. By September
1943, 10./JG 3 was based at Neubiberg in Germany having withdrawn through
Italy during the later half of 1943. Schäfer had raised his victory total
to four by this time. On 24 April 1944, he claimed a USAAF B-17 four-engine
bomber Herausschus for his 12th victory and shortly afterwards he claimed
an engültige Vernichtung when he shot down a B-17 badly damaged by another
pilot. During May, IV.(Sturm)/JG 3 was re-equiped with the Fw 190 A-8 fighter.
In the aerial battle over Oschersleben against USAAF four-engine bombers
on 7 July, Schäfer claimed two B-24s shot down for his 16th and 17th victories.
On 10 August, 10.(Sturm)/JG 3 was renamed 13.(Sturm)/JG 3. Schäfer claimed
his 18th, and last, victory on 7 October when he shot down B-17 south of
Halle.
Hans Schäfer was credited with 18 victories. All
his victories were recorded over the Western front
and included 12 four-engine bombers.
