Manfred Meurer was born on 8 September 1919 at Hamburg. In 1938 he joined the Luftwaffe. Initially he served in an anti-aircraft artillery unit but during 1939 underwent flying training. In 1940 he was assigned to Zerstörer Schule to undergo training flying the twin-engined Bf 110 heavy fighter. In winter 1941 he was assigned to 9./NJG 1. Leutnant Meurer achieved his first victory on his first combat mission on the night of 26-27 March 1942. By the end of the year he had eight victories to his credit. On 1 January 1943 he was appointed Staffelkapitän of 3./NJG 1. On the night of 14/15 February he claimed three RAF bombers to record victories 12 through 14 and, on the night of 12/13 March, a further four for victories 20 through 23. On 16 April he was awarded the Ritterkreuz. During May he scored, in total, 14 victories, including three on the nights of 23/24 May and 25/26 May, and four on the night of 29/30 May. On the night of 27/28 July he achieved his 50th victory, a RAF Mosquito. On 2 August he was awarded the Eichenlaub (Nr 264).

On 5 August 1943, Hauptmann Meurer was appointed
Gruppenkommandeur of II./NJG 5. With this unit he was to gain six victories.
On 28 September 1943, he was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of I./NJG 1 succeeding
Hauptmann Hans-Dieter Frank (55 victories, RK) lost on the night of 27-28
September. The unit was equipped with the latest German night-fighter,
the He 219, and Meurer was to gain five victories flying the type. On the
night of 12/13 December he shot down a RAF Mosquito to bring up his 60th
victory. He recorded his 61st and 62nd victories on 16/17 December. On
the night of 21-22 January 1944 he collided with a RAF Lancaster raiding
Berlin. His He 219 A-0 (W.Nr. 190070) “G9+BB” crashed at speed into the
bomber and both aircraft carried their crews to their deaths.
Manfred Meurer flew 130 combat missions achieving
65 victories. Included in his score are 40 four-engined bombers and two
Mosquitos. All his victories were scored at night.
