Karl-Heinz "Heino" Greisert
Major

Karl-Heinz Greisert

Karl-Heinz “Heino” Greisert was born on 2 February 1908. Greisert gained combat experience with the Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War. Leutnant Greisert was assigned to 2. Staffel of J 88. He recorded his first, and only, victory during that conflict when he shot down a Russian made, Republican flown I-16 fighter on 30 November 1937. At the outbreak of World War 2, Greisert was serving with JG 2. He gained his initial successes of World War 2 during the Battle of France flying with 2./JG 2. By the end of the French campaign, Oberleutnant Greisert’s victory total stood at six. Greisert was promoted to command II./JG 2 on 3 September 1940. Following the death of Major Helmut Wick (56 victories, RK-EL) in aerial combat on 28 October 1940, Hauptmann Greisert was appointed acting Geschwaderkommodore of JG 2 until 16 February 1941. On 17 April 1942, he claimed one of the RAF’s new Lancaster four-engine bombers shot down. Twelve of the new bombers were undertaking a daylight mission to bomb the MAN diesel-engine workshops at Augsburg when they flew over Beaumont-le-Roger. Greisert was able to lead II./JG 2 in an attack that claimed three of bombers shot down. Greisert remained in charge of II./JG 2 until 8 May 1942. On 18 May 1942, Greisert was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of III./JG 3 based on the Eastern Front. Major Greisert added a further 11 victories to his victory tally. In the first 16 days of July alone, he claimed eight victories, including six Russian Il-2 Sturmovik ground-attack aircraft. On 22 July 1942, Greisert was shot down in a low-level aerial combat with a Russian I-16 fighter. He successfully baled out of his damaged Bf 109 F-4 (W.Nr. 8652) but, due to his lack of altitude, his parachute failed to open and Greisert was killed. He was a recipient of the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold.
“Heino” Greisert was credited with 34 victories. He recorded 11 victories over the Eastern front, including six Il-2 Sturmoviks. Included in his total are eleven Spitfires.
