Otto Dommeratzky
Leutnant
Otto Dommeratzky was born on 3 May 1916 at Löderburg
near Staßfurt in Sachsen-Anhalt. Dommeratzsky probably flew his first combat
missions over Poland and in the French campaign with II.(S)/LG 2. He later
operated over the Balkans and participated in the invasion of Russia. In
January 1942, II.(S)/LG 2 was redesignated Sch.G 1. During 1942 and 1943,
Dommeratzky operated with 8./Sch.G 1. He flew over the central and southern
sectors of the Eastern front and was particularly successful in the anti-tank
role as well as against Russian fighters and ground attack aircraft. Dommeratzky
was awarded the Ehrenpokal on 21 September 1942 and the Deutsches Kreuz
in Gold on 3 October. On 5 January 1943, Oberfeldwebel Dommeratzky was
awarded the Ritterkreuz for 20 victories in 425 missions. In spring 1944,
Dommeratzky was serving with 6./SG 2 operating in the fighter escort role
to “Panzerjägers” (Ju 87G) operating in the anti-tank role. By Summer 1944,
he was serving as an instructor with 6./SG 151 based at Proßnitz.
On 13 October 1944, Dommeratzky was shot down and killed in aerial combat
with USAAF fighters over Slawital, four kilometres west of Mährisch Weißkirchen.
Dommeratzky had taken off in an unarmed aircraft with a member of his groundcrew
in the fuselage on a transfer flight to the Eastern front. He encountered
USAAF fighters and was badly shot up. Although he could have used his parachute,
Dommeratzky wanted to save the life of his mechanic. He attempted
a forced landing but both were killed in the subsequent crash of Fw 190
F-3 (W.Nr. 670 324) "Yellow 4". Leutnant Dommeratzky was posthumously awarded
the Eichenlaub (Nr 665) on 25 November 1944.
Otto Dommeratzky was credited with 38 victories
in about 600 missions. All his victories were recorded over the Eastern
front.
