Günther Bleckmann was born on 30 November 1914 at
Bochum. Originally a reconnaissance pilot, Bleckmann was serving with Sch.G.
1 based on the Eastern front in spring 1943. Hauptmann Bleckmann was Staffelkapitän
of 6./Sch.G. 1. He operated predominantly over the central and southern
sectors of the Eastern front performing many successful ground attack missions.
Bleckmann recorded his first aerial victory on 17 August, when he shot
down a Russian Il-2 Sturmovik ground-attack aircraft. On 18 October, 6./Sch.G
1 was redesignated 6./SG 2. By the end of 1943, Bleckmann had accumulated
four aerial victories. He claimed his 10th aerial victory shot down on
28 January 1944. On 7 February, Bleckmann was awarded the Deutsches Kreuz
in Gold. He claimed his 20th aerial victory shot down on 30 May. The next
day, Bleckmann claimed four Russian aircraft shot down to record his 21st
through 24th aerial victories. He claimed a further four victories on 31
May (27-30). On 4 June 1944, while returning from a mission, Bleckmann
was killed when his Fw 190 suddenly burst into flame and crashed near Stanitza
in Rumania. He was posthumously awarded the Ritterkreuz and promoted to
the rank of Major on 1 June.
Günther Bleckmann was credited with 33 victories.
All his victories were recorded over the Eastern
front and included 15 Il-2 Sturmoviks.
