Helmut Belser

Helmut Belser was born on 23 December 1915 at Stuttgart. Belser was serving with JG 53 in July 1941. Oberleutnant Belser was assigned to 2./JG 53. He gained his first victory on 24 July, when he shot down a RAF Halifax four-engine bomber, part of a formation of 15 attacking the German navy battleship Scharnhorst berthed at La Pallice. Belser participated in the invasion of Russia operating with 5./JG 53. By early October 1941, he had increased his total victories to 13. In December 1941, II./JG 53 was relocated to the Mediterranean theatre. Operating from bases in Sicily, Belser flew many missions over Malta. He was to claim 14 victories over and around the island, including his 20th victory on 1 May 1942. On 8 March, Belser was appointed Staffelkapitän of 6./JG 53, replacing Oberleutnant Otto Böhner (9 victories) who had been wounded by anti-aircraft fire a short time before. On 9 April 1942, Belser was transferred as Staffelkapitän of 8./JG 53, replacing Oberleutnant Hans-Joachim Heinecke (28 victories, DK) who was transferring to a staff position. In May, 8./JG 53 relocated to North Africa. Belser was to claim a further nine victories in this theatre, including his 30th victory on 3 June and three RAF Beaufort twin-engine torpedo bombers on 15 June to record his 34th through 36th, and last, victories. Belser was killed in a take-off accident flying Bf 109 F-4 (W.Nr. 10 278) “Black 1” at Castel Benito airfield near Tripoli in Libya on 19 June 1942. He was about 100 metres into his take-off run when his undercarriage struck a depression. The propellor contacted the ground and the aircraft flipped over on to its back. The auxilliary fuel tank then exploded and the aircraft caught fire. Belser was unable to extricate himself from the machine and burned to death. He was posthumously awarded the Ritterkreuz on 6 September.
Helmut Belser was credited with 36 victories. He recorded 12 victories over the Eastern front.
