Franz Barten
Hauptmann

Franz Barten

Franz Barten was born on 26 January 1912 at Saarbrücken. Barten was posted to JG 77 on 1 July 1939. Feldwebel Barten was assigned to 2./JG 77. He participated in the invasions of Poland and France as well as the Battle of Britain. He claimed his first victory on 14 September 1940, when he shot down a RAF Hurricane fighter. On 21 November, 2./JG 77 was redesignated 11./JG 51. By the end of 1940, he had three victories to his credit. Barten accompanied 11./JG 51 to the Eastern front. He recorded his 10th victory on 12 July 1941 and his 20th on 10 September. By the end of 1941, his victory total stood at 25. Barten recorded his 30th victory on 18 March 1942. On 10 November, Barten was wounded necessitating a lengthy absence from combat duty. Following his recovery, Barten returned to IV./JG 51. He recorded his 44th victory, and last on the Eastern front, on 4 August. On 1 June 1943, Barten was transferred, as acting Staffelkapitän, to 7./JG 53 based in the Mediterranean theatre, replacing Hauptmann Jürgen Harder (64 victories, RK-EL, killed in flying accident 17 February 1945) who was being withdrawn from combat duty because he was now the only surviving son following the death of his two brothers in combat. Leutnant Barten was appointed Staffelkapitän of 9./JG 53 on 15 July 1943, following the death of Oberleutnant Hans Roehrig (75 victories, RK) on 13 July. Barten recorded his 50th victory on 3 September, when he shot down a USAAF B-24 four-engine bomber near Della Pecara. Barten led 9./JG 53 on Reichsverteidigung duties based at Bad Lippspringe in  Germany. On 4 August 1944, Oberleutnant Barten was shot down in Bf 109 G-6 (W.Nr. 441 575) “Yellow 15” in aerial combat with USAAF P-47 fighters near Rheinsehlen. He baled out of his stricken aircraft only to be shot while hanging in his parachute. Barten was posthumously awarded the Ritterkreuz and promoted to the rank of Hauptmann.
Franz Barten was credited with 55 victories in 895 missions. He recorded 40 victories over the Eastern front, including at least five Il-2 Sturmoviks. Of his 15 victories recorded over the Western front, two were four-engine bombers.
