    Hans-Heinz Augenstein was born on 11 July 1921 at Pforzheim-Brötzingen in Baden. Augenstein was serving with NJG 1 in July 1942. Leutnant Augenstein was assigned to 3./NJG 1. He claimed his first victory on the night of 31 July/1 August, when he shot down a RAF Wellington twin-engine bomber near Ahlhorn. By the end of 1942, Augenstein had transferred to 7./NJG 1. He claimed four victories on the night of 27/28 May. He led the unit from 31 January 1944. On 1 March 1944, Augenstein was appointed Staffelkapitän of 12./NJG 1. Oberleutnant Augenstein was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 9 June 1944. During 1944, Augenstein was to claim 42 victories. He claimed his last three victories on the night of 4/5 November 1944. On the night of 6/7 December 1944, Augenstein’s Bf 110 G-4 (W.Nr. 140 078) “G9 + HZ” was shot down 10km northwest of Münster-Handorf by a RAF night fighter. Augenstein and his Bordfunker were killed but his Bordschütze was able to bale out unharmed.
    Hans-Heinz Augenstein was credited with 46 victories. All his victories were recorded at night and included 45 four-engine bombers.
